Governors (and Deputies and Actings)

The Governor of Wentworth Detention Centre was always one of the main characters in Prisoner. Roughly spoken there were only two Governors during the series, Erica Davidson and Ann Reynolds. If we look more into detail it will be discovered that there were also periods when Erica or Ann were not in power. There were times when they were on leave of absence, suspended, temporarily resigned, on sickleave, kidnapped and so on. During those times the Governor's position was taken by an Acting Governor. Usually the position of Acting Governor was filled by the Deputy Governor.

Erica Davidson

Erica Davidson was the Governor of Wentworth when the Prisoner series began.

She handed in her resignation in episode 59, was however pursuaded to take leave of absence instead. She began her leave of absence in episode 63 and returned as Governor in 67.

Erica was relieved from her post in episode 196, but returned in 197.

Erica was kidnapped from episode 230 to 232 and returned to service in 239.

Near the end of episode 360 the Head of the Department, Ted Douglas, forced Erica to resign. Actually we never saw the moment of resignation itself. We watched Mr Douglas summon Erica, but nothing more. In the beginning of episode 361 he informed the staff about her resignation.

Officers Colleen Powell, Meg Morris and Joan Ferguson all applied to succeed Erica as Governor of Wentworth.

Ann Reynolds

In episode 364 Ted Douglas introduced the new and surprising Governor of Wentworth, Ann Reynolds, to the staff. She was introduced in the last scene of that episode and started working in episode 365.

From episode 417 Ann had to go on sickleave to be operated for breast cancer. She returned as Governor in episode 429.

In episode 467 the Acting Minister fired Ann as Governor of Wentworth, although she was re-instated two episodes later after not even having had time to leave her post. If Ann really had been fired at this time it seems Officer Joan Ferguson would have been appointed her successor as Governor.

Ann was kidnapped from episode 497 to 500. She returned to work in 503 after a few episodes of sickleave. She had to go on sickleave again from episode 507 to 511.

In episode 516 Ann was offered a job at the Department. In the next episode she decided to accept it, but in episode 521 she changed her mind and remained as Governor of Wentworth.

In episode 557 Ann was offered the position as new Head of the Department. She accepted the position in episode 561, but changed her mind later in the same episode. If Ann had become Head of the Department at this time it seems Deputy Governor Meg Morris would have been appointed her successor as Governor.

After all events at Wentworth, Ann decided to take leave of absence from episode 590. She returned as Governor in episode 605.

In episode 628 the Minister, James Dwyer, fired Ann, but re-instated her in the same episode.

In episode 670 Mr Dwyer fired Ann again, but she was once again re-instated in episode 677.

Deputy Governors

When the series began Vera Bennett was the Deputy Governor of Wentworth, although we were told this only for the first time in episode 15 when it was mentioned to new the Social Worker, Jean Vernon. Vera was suspended in episode 16, but re-instated in 17.

In episode 39 the Visiting Justice, Mr Goodwin, investigated the running of Wentworth. Vera thought she would now be appointed to succeed Erica as Governor. Vera was shocked when the VJ recommended her degradation to common officer and the appointment of a male Deputy Governor.

In episode 40 Jim Fletcher succeeded Vera as Deputy Governor. He was suspended in episode 47, but re-instated in 48. Jim resigned in episode 256 to become Governor of another prison.

In episode 260 Meg Morris was chosen to succeed Jim as Deputy Governor. However she declined the offer in a last attempt to save her marriage.

In episode 261 Colleen Powell was appointed Deputy Governor instead of Meg. Colleen resigned in episode 456.

In episode 456 Meg Morris was appointed Deputy Governor after the resignation of Colleen Powell.

From episode 605 to 608 Bob Moran temporarily replaced Meg as Deputy Governor.

In episode 619 the Minister, James Dwyer, decided to replace Meg with Joan Ferguson as Deputy Governor.

In episode 677 Meg Morris was once again appointed Deputy Governor.

Acting Governors (and Acting Deputies)

This sub-article mentions those times the Governor or the Deputy was replaced by an Acting Governor or an Acting Deputy. It doesn't include those short moments when an Acting Governor took over for a day or so because the Governor was out on some business in the service.

Jim Fletcher was appointed Acting Governor in episode 63 when Erica Davidson went on leave of absence. Vera Bennett was appointed Acting Deputy during this time. Erica returned as Governor in episode 67.

Jim Fletcher was appointed Acting Governor in episode 196 when Erica was relieved from her post. However she returned already in the following episode.

Jim Fletcher was appointed Acting Governor when Erica was kidnapped in episode 230 until her return in episode 239.

Colleen Powell was appointed Acting Governor in episode 361 after the resignation of Erica Davidson. Colleen appointed Meg Morris as her Acting Deputy.

Colleen was appointed Acting Governor in episode 417 when Governor Ann Reynolds had to be operated for breast cancer and took sickleave. Once again Colleen appointed Meg Morris as her Acting Deputy.

In episode 419 Joan Ferguson replaced Meg as Acting Deputy.

In episode 422 Colleen was forced to take leave of absence and Joan was appointed Acting Governor.

In episode 425 Meg was appointed Acting Deputy again.

Joan was forced to resign in episode 426 and Colleen was reinstated as Acting Governor. Meg was Acting Governor for a short moment between Joan and Colleen.

In episode 429 Ann Reynolds returned as Governor from her sickleave and Colleen went back to being her Deputy.

In episode 441 Meg Morris was appointed Acting Deputy, replacing Colleen who resigned from Wentworth in episode 456 and Meg was appointed Deputy for real.

Joyce Barry was Acting Governor from episode 498 to 503 in connection to the kidnapping of Governor Ann Reynolds and Deputy Governor Meg Morris.

Len Murphy was Acting Governor from episode 507 to 511 when Governor Ann Reynolds was on sickleave. Joyce Barry was appointed Acting Deputy (after having turned down being Acting Governor again).

Meg Morris returned in episode 508 to work as Deputy Governor, but had to take sickleave again from episode 515 to 519 for a tumour operation with Joyce Barry as Acting Deputy.

Joan Ferguson was Acting Deputy from episode 515 to 517 when Joyce Barry was in hospital for a shot wound.

Meg Morris returned in episode 519 to work as Deputy Governor.

When Ann Reynolds went on leave of absence from episode 590, Meg Morris first went in as Acting Governor until episode 595 when Bob Moran arrived to take over as Acting Governor and Meg went back to being Deputy.

In episode 605 Ann returned as Governor. Bob was made Deputy and Meg further degraded.

In episode 608 Meg was re-instated as Deputy and Bob degraded.

In episode 628 Joan Ferguson was Acting Governor for a short moment between that the Minister, James Dwyer, fired Ann and re-instated her.

In episode 670, after Mr Dwyer had fired Ann, Ernest Craven was appointed Acting Governor. However, already in the same episode, Craven agreed to being Acting Deputy instead and letting Joan Ferguson be Acting Governor.

Craven was killed by prisoner Lorelei Wilkinson in episode 672. In the following episode, both Meg Morris and Joyce Pringle turned down Joan's offer to become her Deputy. Officer Rodney Adams was interested in having this position instead, but it seems he was never officially appointed.

In episode 677, Joan's period as Acting Governor ended when Ann Reynolds was re-instated as Governor with Meg Morris as her Deputy again.
