Two new remand prisoners, Minnie Donovan and the young Bobbie Mitchell, arrive to Wentworth. Minnie, supported by Judy and Cass, takes over as top dog from Sonia. Petra is released. Sonia tries to get Joan's support by blackmailing her with tape recordings of their revealing conversations. These tapes will waltz around so much that you in the end almost don't know who has them. A new prisoner, falsifier Brenda Hewitt, arrives at Wentworth. She has contacts with gangster boss Lionel Fellowes and starts co-operating with Sonia. Arthur Richards is dismissed and for a while the Minister himself, Charles Harnsworth, runs things pending a new Head of the Department. A representative from the Department comes to investigate the situation at Wentworth, it is Erica Davidson. Joan guides her father in the prison, but is humiliated when the women refus to obey her. A little later, Major Ferguson is kidnapped by Gary Wilder and Kevin Stansfield, Reb's accomplices. They demand that Joan lets Reb escape. Belinda makes an attempt to strangle Sonia, but is stopped by the other women. A new, elderly, prison officer, Stanley Dobson, starts working at Wentworth. Joan intends to let Reb escape, but the women find out the plan and take in their turn Reb as hostage to put pressure on Joan to resign. Joan resigns and Colleen, who has been cleared for the car accident, is reinstated as Acting Governor. Gary and Kevin manage to get Reb out of prison and they also take Joan as hostage. However, the Major manages to escape, while Joan gets her hands on a gun and shoots Gary to death. Reb and Kevin manag to escape, but Reb is arrested shortly afterwards and returned to Wentworth.

Meryl reveals to Sonia that Eddie is a corrupt police, as well as detectives Les Birmingham and Fred Mears. Sonia passes on this information to Rick, who is a former police and colleague of these. Rick can't believe this about his old friend Eddie, so he spies on him and is knocked down by Fellowes' gang and almost killed but Eddie saves him. Eddie asks Rick not to interfer, but Rick is anxious because corrupt polices might be involved in the death of his fiancée. The real perpetrator of Mo's alleged burglary is arrested, but she is kept in prison because of disciplinary offences. Camilla Wells, who has been released, makes a big thing out of this and the authorities have to release Mo at the end. Rick reports Eddie's doings to Inspector Maynard, but he also seems to be involved and doesn't do anything about it. During a family row, Myra knocks down Bill with a bottle and he dies.

Myra is placed at Wentworth pending her trial. Reb, seemingly regretful, is allowed to take part in the singing group. The released Meryl is murdered by some gangsters.
